I know this is a food blog, and that most of the time, food blogs showcase great food. I mean, sure, food blogs will highlight minor mishaps and kitchen blunders here and there, but for the most part, we all expect to see beautiful food, right?
Well, after a slight scare that put me in the hospital for two nights and modified bedrest for the rest of this week, I just couldn’t not do a post on this. I took a picture of every meal that was delivered to my room, because I was in total shock at how disgusting each was!
Last time I checked, a hospital was a place that cared for you physical well-being. One would expect that the food to be healthy, nourishing, complete, no? Here was the menu while I was being monitored for bleeding and pre-term contractions (don’t worry, the IV meds they administered took care of everything—for now at least!):

First meal after coming off of IV meds:
- A very salty chicken broth
- Lemon Jello
- Orange juice
- Coffee

Breakfast:
- White toast
- Rubbery scrambled eggs
- Two cold, fried sausages
- Oatmeal
- 2% milk
- Orange juice
- Coffee

Lunch:
- Mac ‘n’ cheese (topped with breadcrumbs)
- Buttered peas
- White dinner roll
- Lemon bar dusted in powdered sugar
- Salty minestrone soup
- Two packets of saltine crackers
- 2% milk
- Grape juice

Dinner:
- Beef stroganoff over egg noodles
- Buttered carrots
- White dinner roll
- Jello fruit salad
- Peach cobbler with whipped cream
- Coffee

Breakfast:
- Orange muffin
- Rubbery scrambled eggs
- Two slices of ham
- Cream of Wheat
- 2% milk
- Orange juice
- Coffee
The crazy thing is, is that with each meal came a description of the USDA Pyramid, as well as advice on how to eat a well-rounded meal. Sorry, but when you’re being fed fried sausages for breakfast, mac ‘n’ cheese as your lunch entree and two desserts for dinner, I don’t think that qualifies as being a healthful meal. Not to mention what it did to my digestive system (or what it didn’t do, I guess I should say. All the food that went in basically stagnated and refused to come out. I know, I know, that’s a little too much information.)
Oh well. I’m out of the hospital now, and back on my low fat, super high-fiber diet. The bleeding and contractions have stopped…but now I feel like I have to nurse my diet back into shape!
On another note, I did get some R&R while laying in bed the whole time. I spent most of the days reading magazines and checking my BlackBerry. Fun times!

Glad to hear that all is well! When I was in the hospital after both boys were born, I was pleasantly surprised by how decent the food was. They had a full menu from which you could order whatever you wanted and some of it was actually tasty.

eeek! that looks frightening. so funny that it all came with the pyramid and tips…bet they run down a little checklist when putting together that tray of food: 2 veggies, 1 meat, 1 bread, etc. hahah! fun post.

hmm…2 desserts. I’d just eat the 2 desserts and call it a meal. :)

Oh man. Hospital food is the WORST. A friend of mine is a dietitian in a local hospital, he has been trying for years to revamp the hospital food by including whole grains instead of white bread, fresh fruit and vegetables and a more well rounded meal in general. As of today, his voice has not been heard. It’s sad really.
Hope you and baby are ok! Get your friends to sneak you in good food!
